Joint investigation into illegal employment in Banff hotels results in conviction and $70k fine

Following a collaborative investigation by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Kevin Kielty, owner of the employment agency One Team, has been sentenced for orchestrating the illegal employment of foreign nationals in Alberta’s hospitality sector. The probe, which began in 2022 after tips from Ontario law enforcement, uncovered approximately 90 Mexican nationals working without authorization at resort hotels in Banff and Jasper National Park. On March 2, 2026, Kielty pleaded guilty in the Alberta Court of Justice to charges under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), receiving a $70,000 fine, two years of probation, and 50 hours of community service. This marks Kielty's second conviction for similar offences, highlighting the Federal Government's ongoing crackdown on immigration fraud and the unauthorized employment of foreign workers within the Canadian tourism industry.
