Canadian Council for Refugees challenges Safe Third Country Agreement in court

The Canadian Council for Refugees, together with Amnesty International Canada, has launched a new legal challenge against the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States. The organizations argue that the United States can no longer be considered safe for many refugee claimants and that Canada is unlawfully returning asylum seekers to potential harm. Under the agreement, most refugee claimants arriving from the United States are turned back at the border. The applicants argue that some of these individuals may face detention, inadequate safeguards, and the risk of deportation to countries where they could face persecution or other serious harm. The legal challenge seeks to strengthen protections for refugee claimants and ensure compliance with constitutional and human rights obligations. The Canadian Council for Refugees is also raising funds to support the court case and related advocacy efforts.
