A Federal Court judge has upheld the government's decision to strip Jorge Vinicio Sosa Orantes of his Canadian citizenship after discovering he concealed his involvement in a 1982 massacre in Guatemala. Justice Roger Lafreniere ruled that Sosa, now 67, deliberately misled immigration authorities about his military background when applying for permanent residency. The former special forces member participated in a deadly operation at Las Dos Erres village during Guatemala's civil conflict. Ottawa launched legal proceedings in 2017, arguing that citizenship obtained through fraud should be revoked. The court agreed, declaring Sosa inadmissible to Canada and effectively nullifying his citizenship status.
