The Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR) has issued a stern critique of the Federal Government’s recent policy direction following the election of Prime Minister Mark Carney. In her annual message, CCR President Diana Gallego highlighted the "Strong Borders Act," or Bill C-2, as a dangerous piece of legislation that threatens to undermine refugee rights and increase the risk of human rights violations. The organization expressed deep concern over significant cuts to immigration levels and the freezing of Group of Five sponsorship programs, which have left many vulnerable individuals stranded. Despite a rising tide of xenophobia and political rhetoric blaming migrants for the cost-of-living crisis, the CCR remains committed to advocating for asylum with dignity and protecting the rights of all newcomers.
