Foreign postdoctoral fellows show strong Canadian earnings despite declining retention

A new Statistics Canada study shows that foreign postdoctoral fellows face declining retention rates but achieve exceptional economic success if they stay in Canada. Annual inflows of these high-skilled researchers decreased from 2021 to 2024. Only 22 percent of the 2010-to-2014 arrival cohort obtained permanent residency within ten years, down from 28 percent in the early 2000s. Tax data also shows that long-term active presence declines over time. However, those who remain in Canada significantly out-earn other immigrant groups. Former postdoctoral fellows earned 15 percent more than other international mobility participants in their first year, with the wage gap widening over time.
