New Canadian study reveals economic challenges for immigrants and non-permanent residents

A new Statistics Canada analysis covering 2016 to 2022 has identified significant income disparities among newcomers to Canada. The research shows that 38% of non-permanent residents and 30% of recent immigrants who arrived between 2012 and 2016 experienced low income in 2016. While non-permanent residents demonstrated remarkable upward mobility over the study period, they remained nearly twice as likely to experience persistent low income as non-immigrants. The findings highlight that recent immigrants faced the highest risk of long-term financial hardship at 17%, compared to just 8% for Canadian-born residents. Education emerged as a critical protective factor, with higher educational attainment significantly reducing income vulnerability across all immigrant groups studied.
