Statistics Canada reports a slight increase in payroll employment and stable job vacancies

A new Statistics Canada report shows that Canadian payroll employment edged up by 22,000 in April. Growth was led by the health care, social assistance, and public administration sectors. However, these gains were partially offset by declines in employment in professional services, manufacturing, and construction. Meanwhile, the country recorded 490,500 job vacancies, showing little change for the fourth month in a row. Average weekly earnings grew by 1.0% over the previous month to reach $1,346. Year-over-year data shows weekly earnings increased by 3.8% while total job vacancies decreased by 3.4%.
